About
What this is
Carte Impressa is a map of fine art printshops around the world. It includes membership shops, collectives, university programs, residencies, invitational publishers, and individual artist studios. Soon, studios will be able to add and edit their own listings. Free to use, free to be listed in. Listings are never paid for and never will be.
Who made it
Carte Impressa is published by Abet Editions, the project of Nate Fredenburg: a press and workshop in Sebastopol, California for interdisciplinary and collaborative art making.
Why it exists
After a printmaking collaboration in Chile in 2022, Nate started seeking out studios whenever he travelled. It became clear quickly that there is a large, active, global printmaking community and no easy way to find it. This is an attempt to change that: somewhere printmakers can discover studios, plan residencies, and connect with peers on every continent.
How it was built
By hand, from public sources — studio websites, published interviews, institutional listings, and a great deal of following one link to the next. Research in Spanish as well as English surfaced studios that don’t appear in English-language searches at all.
The data
This is a beta, and the data is drawn entirely from public sources — which means it’s incomplete, some of it may be wrong, and studios that aren’t well documented online may be underrepresented. Every listing shows where its information came from and when it was last checked. If something’s wrong, the link on any studio page comes straight to us.
Get involved
Tell us what’s missing, especially outside the US and Europe, or correct your own listing if it’s yours. Sign up for updates in the footer. Coming next: studios claiming and editing their own listings, artist profiles, more languages, and tools for events and announcements. We’re building this with the community, not just for it.
Printmaking has always been a field that shares — presses, knowledge, workspace, and the prints themselves. This is an attempt to give that generosity somewhere to live online.
